LCSC wraps up Georgia trip with 8-1 setback

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – The up-and-down season for the Lewis-Clark State College baseball team continued on Sunday as the eighth-ranked Warriors fell to Indiana Tech for the second straight day, this time 8-1 to complete play in the Grizzly Spring Classic at Georgia Gwinnett.

LCSC, now 10-8 overall, went 2-3 in the Classic, defeating No. 2-ranked Georgia Gwinnett twice, but losing to unranked Madonna and Indiana Tech, which is now 15-4 overall.

In Sunday's contest, LCSC outhit Indiana Tech 12-10, but again had trouble collecting the key hit and left 12 stranded on base. LCSC left at least one base runner stranded in eight of the nine innings.

Cody Keller picked up the win for Indiana Tech to improve to 5-1 on the season. He pitched seven innings and allowed 11 hits but just the one run. He also struck out four and didn't walk a batter. Jacob Koehring allowed one hit and a walk over the final two innings, but struck out five.

LCSC picked up its lone run in the fourth inning. Matt Thompson started the rally with a two-out single and was replaced by courtesy runner Chase Hafer. Emilio Alcantar followed with a single to move Hafer to second. A wild pitch got Hafer to third and Raymond Pedrina followed with a single through the left side of the inning to score Hafer.

LCSC's run tied the game at 1-1 as Indiana Tech scored a run in the bottom of the second on a sacrifice fly.

Indiana Tech scored three runs in the fifth and four in the sixth to break the contest open. A walk, two singles and a throwing error allowed the first run in the fifth to score, while a single and sacrifice fly brought in the final two runs.

In the Indiana Tech sixth, the damage was done all with two outs. A single and two walks loaded the bases to set up Tighe Koehring's three-run double, which turned out to be the only extra-base hit for either team in the game. He later scored on a single by Peyton Newsom.

LCSC used four pitchers in the contest. Starter Rian Bassett went four innings and allowed four runs on seven hits. He struck out five. Matt Gorgolinski retired the side in order in his only inning, while Anthony Balderas was touched for four runs on three hits and three walks in his inning of work. Steve Pastora pitched the final two innings and didn't allow a hit. He struck out three and walked two.

Thompson led the Warriors at the plate as he was 3-of-4. Alcantar, Evan Douglas, and Seaver Whalen collected two hits apiece.

LCSC will try to rebound on the road next week when it plays six games in five days. The Warriors kick off a four-game series against College of Idaho on Friday in Caldwell with single games on Friday and Sunday and a doubleheader on Saturday. LCSC then takes on Northwest Nazarene in non-league play single games on Monday and Tuesday.
