BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Lewis-Clark State College Men's and Women's Golf teams started the 2021-22 season on a solid note as both stand in the top three after the opening day of the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds Invitational being played at Sudden Valley Golf Course.
 
The Warrior men are in second place after the opening 36 holes of their 54-hole event, while the Warrior women are third at the halfway point of their 36-hole tourney, which serves as the first of three Cascade Collegiate Conference tournaments this season.
 
Devon Caruso led a strong showing by the Warrior men's team. He matched par in the opening round with a 72 and followed it up with a one-under-par 71 for a 143 total, just a shot behind University of British Columbia's Ethan de Graaf, who leads the field at 142.
 
In the team race, nationally ranked and host No. 15 UBC leads at 578, while the Warriors are second at 588. Multnomah is third, but 30 shots behind LC State at 618.
 
In the preseason coaches poll, the Warrior men were selected to finish fifth in the CCC, something coach Brady Campbell said the team has used for motivation for the season.
 
"We did exactly what we came here to do," Campbell said. "Be in contention and show the other teams we are here to win. We are still using our preseason ranking as inspiration."
 
LC State's Jacob Waller is tied for fifth at 146, while Kristof Panke is eighth at 149 and Carlos Davila is tied for ninth at 150.
 
"We had a great game plan for this course and executed it," Campbell said. "The only thing we need to do better tomorrow is finish a little stronger. We played very consistent today and Devon, our team captain, led us today with some really solid golf. Now it's time to go win it tomorrow."
 
The young Warrior women's team stands only four shots out of second place. No. 8 UBC leads the field at 309, followed by No. 19 Oregon Tech at 332 and LC State at 336.
 
Kyla Currie led the Warrior women with an 80 to stand tied for sixth overall, while Alexandra Schmidt is one shot back at 81.
 
"The women battled today on a difficult course," Campbell said. "We had a tough time managing our mistakes but we know what we need to do tomorrow to move up the board. We will only play better from here."
 
The final 18 holes of both tournaments will be held this morning, also at Sudden Valley Golf Course.
