LEWISTON, Idaho – The fourth-ranked LC State Baseball team improved to 11-1 with a 19-2 victory over NCAA Division III Whitworth on Sunday. The Warrior offense tallied 19 runs on 14 hits behind a strong pitching performance from start to finish.
Trent Sellers gave the Warriors five quality innings with eight strikeouts and only one walk.
Joe Ball,
Eli Shubert,
Drake Borschowa and
Greg Blackman each threw an inning and combined to strike out seven without allowing a run. One hit was given up by the bullpen.
"Other than a blemish in the fourth, Trent was attacking their lineup," Head Coach
Jake Taylor said. "Our bullpen was very strong today. Offensively, it is great to see production off of the bench. That will continue to push everybody to compete for their playing time each day at practice."
Sellers started his day with a pair of punchouts before LC State put up a four spot in the home half of the first inning.
Sam Linscott stayed hot at the plate, knocking in
A.J. Davis after his single and stolen base.
Luke White walked to put two on before
Justin Mazzone sent a ball over the P1FCU Video Board to make it a 4-0 ball game.
Sellers struck out the side in order in the second, then one more in the third. Whitworth took advantage of two free passes in the fourth and brought in both with a double to cut the LC lead in half.

Zach Threlfall doubled and took third on a wild pitch, then scored on a base hit by
Riley Way. Davis and
Aidan Nagle reached on Pirate miscues, and two runs came in with a base hit up the middle by Linscott. LC carried a 7-2 lead through four innings.
Sellers added to his strikeout total with two more in the fifth before handing the ball over to Ball in the sixth. The lefty capped a 1-2-3 inning with a strikeout.
LC added on in the sixth with a seven-run outburst. A passed ball brought in one to start the scoring, and White doubled down the left field line to plate Nagle before
Coy Stout knocked in two with a base hit up the middle. Way cleared the bases with a two-out, three-run home run to make it 14-2.
Another five runs in the seventh pushed the cushion to 19-2.
Jaden Phillips doubled down the left field line to bring in
Charlie Updegrave, and
Coy Stout's first home run as a Warrior came in the form of a grand slam to put the game away.
Linscott continued his strong start to the season with a 3-for-4 day and three RBI. Way and Stout each had two hits, with Stout knocking in six runs and Way driving in four. 10 different Warriors collected a hit in the contest and LC swiped six bags.
Sellers struck out eight in his five innings and earned the win. Ball struck out one while Shubert, Borschowa and Blackman each fanned two. The LC pitching staff gave up just five hits.
The Warriors host DII Central Washington next weekend in a four-game set starting on Friday.
