SALEM, Ore. – The Lewis-Clark State College Men's Golf team put itself in contention for both the Cascade Conference regular-season title and the Corban Spring Invitational title despite playing 36 holes in miserable conditions Monday at the Creekside Golf Club.

With temperatures in the low 40s and the wind chill factor in the high 30s, the Warriors braved the cold, snow, wind and rainy conditions to take the first-round lead in the Corban Spring Invitational. LC State carded a team score of 591 over the 36 holes, while British Columbia and Corban are tied for second at 606.

This is the third of four conference tournaments, and a running score from the four tournaments is used to determine the regular-season champion. LC State entered the tournament trailing UBC by 10 strokes, but now enters Tuesday's final 18 holes leading by five shots.

The Warriors improved nine shots from the first round to the second round, thanks to Jorgen Lie Viken, Carlos Davila and Kristof Panke. Viken fired rounds of 74 and then 70 to stand at even par 144. He holds the individual lead by two shots over Davila, who matched 73s in both rounds for a 146. Panke is tied for third at 148, but shaved 10 shots off his opening round with the day's overall best score with a 69.

"Jorgen, Carlos and Kristof were very solid today," LC coach Brady Campbell said. "I am very happy with how we played today as we gave ourselves a lot of chances and battled well through the conditions. We have a big lead, which is something new for us, but we look forward to a new challenge."

The Warriors played the par-5 holes at even par in both rounds. Viken had 10 birdies on the day, which topped the field, while Davila was second with eight. The two also played all the par-4s at even par.

On the women's side, Deana Caruso fired a 79 to lead the Warriors. She stands tied for seventh individually after 18 holes of the 36-hole event on the women's side, while the Warriors are tied for fourth in the team standings with Corban.

"The women struggled today on a soft golf course," Campbell said, alluding to course conditions caused by the weather. "Deana continued to lead us as she has all spring and played solid. Mylaina had one of her better rounds this spring to help us today. The women will bounce back tomorrow."

Caruso was fairly consistent for the Warriors with a 39 on the front nine, which included one birdie, and a 40 on the backside. Mylaina Parker had two birdies on the day in shooting an 83. Kyla Currie had an 87, while Alexandra Schmidt and Nicole Propheter both carded 89s.

British Columbia has a commanding lead on the women's side after a 300 Monday, 23 strokes ahead of non-league participant Northwest Nazarene and 29 shots ahead of its nearest Cascade Conference competitor Oregon Tech. LC and Corban are at 338. LC State will need a big day during the final 18 holes on Tuesday to overtake Oregon Tech in the overall standings. Oregon Tech now leads the Warriors by 27 strokes.
