EAGLE POINT, Ore. – It all comes down to the final day and final round for the Lewis-Clark State College Men's Golf Team and its Cascade Conference title hopes.
The Warriors find themselves trailing the University of British Columbia by five shots after 36 holes of play in the two-day Cascade Conference Collegiate Golf Championships, presented by U.S. Bank, at Eagle Point Golf Club.
The 54-hole event concludes with the final 18 holes on 'Tuesday.
Along with the conference tournament championship on the line, so is the regular-season title. The regular season uses a head-to-head scoring system from four tournaments during the season, the final one being the conference championship. And heading into the final round on Tuesday, UBC and LC State are deadlocked.
"We put ourselves in position to win and that's what we wanted," LC State Coach
Brady Campbell said after Monday's play.
On the women's side, LC State stands fourth after 18 holes in the 36-hole conference championships.
The Warrior men opened play on Monday with a 294 team score, just six shots over par, which gave them a four-shot lead. LC, however, shot 300 during the second round while UBC shot the best round of the day with a 291 to grab the lead.
"The men got off to a good start with the Round 1 lead," Campbell said. "We had about a two hour stretch in the middle of the day where we lost our rhythm, but we were able to right the ship."
LC State's
Kristof Panke is tied for third overall individually at 147 after rounds of 73 and 74.
Carlos Davila is a shot back at 148 after matching rounds of 74.
Sondre Andresen and
Jorgen Lie Viken are tied for 10th at 151.
UBC has a 589 team score, followed by LC State at 594. Bushnell is third at 617.
On the women's side, UBC has a commanding 30-shot lead after the first round with a 298 team score. Oregon Tech is at 328, Corban 335 and LC State at 340.
Alexandra Schmidt led the Warriors with an 83, while
Kyla Currie had an 84 and
Deana Caruso an 85.
"The women today were slow out of the gates and just couldn't get it going," Campbell said. "The tough and fast greens were a factor today. We will make our adjustments and be ready for the final round."
The eventual men's and women's tournament champions will earn automatic berths to their respective national tournaments. Because of the Warrior men's Top 25 ranking, they are expected to receive an at-large berth if they don't claim the title.
