EAGLE POINT, Ore. – The Lewis-Clark State College Men's Golf team came up four strokes short in its bid for the Cascade Conference Collegiate Golf Championship, presented by U.S. Bank, at Eagle Point Golf Club on Tuesday.

The Warriors wound up placing second behind the University of British Columbia in both the conference tournament as well as the conference's regular-season race for the title. Both titles were decided during Tuesday's final 18 holes. LC State entered the day trailing UBC by five shots in the conference tournament and needed a victory in the tournament to also clinch the regular season title.

On the women's side, the Warriors finished fourth in their season-ending event.

During Tuesday's play, the LC State men were able to make up one stroke but had some issues on the 10th and 11th holes that were too tough to overcome. UBC wound up shooting a team score of 300 on Tuesday for an 889 total, while LC State had a 299 for an 893 score.

"Losing by four really stings," LC State Coach Brady Campbell said. "The guys would probably like to have one hole back. We dug a big hole in the first five holes and weren't able to get it back."

While UBC earned the automatic berth to the nationals by winning the title, the good news for LC State is that it should receive an at-large berth based on being ranked No. 12 in the latest NAIA poll.

Carlos Davila, with a 1-over-par-73 on Tuesday, led LC State with a 221 score, which placed him fourth overall. Jorgen Lie Viken and Kristof Panke tied for fifth a shot back. Viken had the Warriors' best score during the final round with a 71 and had five of the team's 12 birdies on the day.

LC State stood at 5-over-par Tuesday after the first nine holes, but then LC went six over on each of the 10th and 11th holes. The Warriors then played even par the rest of the way but fell short in its comeback bid. The Warriors actually led the field in in scoring on the par 3s and par 5s and had the most pars in the tournament and played both five shots better than UBC. However, UBC played the par 4s 18 shots better than LC State.

"I'm very proud of how the guys still battled and fought to try to get it back and did a great job of making it close at the end," Campbell said. "We hopefully await an at-large bid to nationals."

The LC State women entered the day in fourth place and despite shooting 14 shots better than the opening round, the Warriors fell a couple shots short of overtaking Corban for third place. UBC won the tournament at 590, while Oregon Tech was next at 635. Corban was third at 663, followed by LC State at 665.

Alexandra Schmidt led the LC State women with a 77 Tuesday for a 160 total, which placed her ninth overall. Kyla Currie and Deana Caruso were 12th and 13th, respectively, with scores of 163 and 165.

"The women bounced back today and I'm proud of the way they battled until the end of the year," Campbell said. "We have a good group coming in next year that will come in and add on to what we built this year."

The NAIA Men's Golf Championships are scheduled May 17-20 in Silvis, Ill.
