No. 8 Corban Outlasts LC State in Regular Season Finale

LEWISTON, Idaho – In a battle of Warriors, it was No. 8 Corban (Ore.) that outlasted LC State Volleyball on Saturday to conclude the regular season. After dropping the first two sets, the LC State Warriors bounced back to take the next two and force a deciding fifth. Corban took the final frame to take the match by scores of 25-21, 26-24, 22-25, 18-25, 15-11.
 
Prior to the match, LC State celebrated its seven seniors. Abbey Neff, Hallie Seaman, Missy Mortensen, Anna Merrill, Natany Felix Guimaraes, Katie Rainville and Taylin Rowley were all honored before the final regular-season contest.
 
LC State concludes the 2024 regular season with a record of 15-12 overall and 12-10 in Cascade Conference play. The Warriors earned the No. 6 seed in the 2024 Cascade Conference Tournament and will host No. 7 Oregon Tech in a play-in match on Tuesday at 6 p.m. Tickets are on sale now at lcwarriors.com/tickets.  
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
LC State jumped in front in the first four sets. Kills by Juliauna Forgach Aguilar, Karissa Lindner and Beaton helped LC to a 4-2 advantage early, and a block by Lindner and Seaman helped push the lead to 10-4. A block by Lindner helped maintain the slim edge at 11-7, and kills by Forgach Aguilar, Beaton and Rowley had the score at 17-14.
 
Corban mounted its comeback late in the first set. The visiting Warriors rattled off six straight to jump in front 21-18 before taking the frame 25-21.
 
The hosting Warriors again surged out in front to start the second set. An ace by Makenzie Stout started the frame and four kills by Forgach Aguilar and one each by Beaton and Rowley made it 7-4. Seaman added a kill before teaming up with Lindner on a block, Rowley tallied a kill, and Lindner slammed one down before a block with Forgach Aguilar made it 13-10.
 
Despite strong swings by Forgach Aguilar, Beaton and Seaman, Corban rallied to pull ahead 18-16. Rowley notched a kill then joined Lindner on a block to put LC in front 19-18, and kills by Lindner and Forgach Aguilar knotted the score 21-21. Another swing by Forgach Aguilar and block by the junior and Beaton had the set tied 23-23, but Corban outlasted LC 26-24.
 
LC State gained momentum late in the third set. After three kills by Lindner put LC up 4-1, Corban answered to take a 5-4 lead. The Warrior teams battled back-and-forth with Corban pulling away 20-15, but a kill by Rowley sparked a 5-1 run to bring LC State back into the frame. With a block by Anna Merrill and Lindner to end the run, the LC Warriors were within one, 21-20.
 
After a kill by Corban, LC State went on a five-point run to close out the set. Forgach Aguilar added a pair of kills to the stretch and errors ended it 25-22.
 
LC State used two aces by Esther Kailiponi to take a 3-0 advantage in the fourth frame. A block by Merrill and Lindner and two kills by Forgach Aguilar tied the set 7-7 before a kill by Seaman and ace by Gianna Anderson made it 10-7 in favor of LC State. Tied 13-13, Forgach Aguilar combined with Beaton on a block before tallying another kill to gain a 17-14 lead.
 
A 7-2 run grew the LC State Warrior advantage to set point, 24-17. Beaton, Seaman, Rowley and Forgach Aguilar all had a kill in the run and Lindner and Rowley added a block. Forgach Aguilar ended the set 25-18 with a kill.
 
Corban regained its footing in the deciding set. A kill by Lindner started the frame, but Corban took the next four points. Forgach Aguilar, Beaton and Lindner notched kills in the set, but the visiting Warriors ended the match 15-11.
 
STAT RECAP
Forgach Aguilar led the contest with 23 kills on a .254 attack percentage and Beaton added a career-high 10 at .444. Kailiponi dished out a match-high 28 assists to pair with a career-high 17 digs for her second straight double-double, and Neff dealt 17 assists.
 
Lindner put up eight blocks for the second straight contest with seven assists and one solo. Felix Guimaraes led the match with 23 digs and Stout collected 13.
 
The LC State Warriors held Corban to a .164 attack percentage with 35 errors and out blocked the visiting team 10-7.
 
Emma Bischoff led Corban with 14 kills and three aces, Kendra Bittle added 13 kills and Makayla Roginksi had 12. Abby Guindy and Nadeiah Howard each dished out 26 assists and Marissa Uehara had 18 digs.

LC State hosts a CCC Tournament play-in match on Tuesday against Oregon Tech. The contest will start at 6 p.m. in the P1FCU Activity Center and season passes are not valid. Tickets for the contest are on sale now at lcwarriors.com/tickets.
