PORTLAND, Ore. – The Warrior offense left little to chance on Friday with a 3-0 (25-15, 25-15, 25-18) sweep of Warner Pacific University (Ore.). LC State hit .333 as a team with just nine attack errors throughout the match.
Sophomore
Makenzie Stout was solid at the service line with four aces and
Juliauna Forgach Aguilar tallied 13 kills. Three Warriors hit .500 or better with at least five kills.
The victory moves LC State to 7-3 on the season and 4-1 in Cascade Conference play. Warner Pacific falls to 0-5 overall and 0-4 in CCC action.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The first set was tightly contested with kills by Forgach Aguilar and
Missy Mortensen, as well as aces by Stout, to put the Warriors in front 6-4. A back-and-forth kept the score knotted until a kill by Forgach Aguilar sparked a run at 14-13. A block by
Anna Merrill and another swing by Forgach Aguilar had the LC State lead at 16-13 to force a WPU pause. Kills by Forgach Aguilar and Mortensen, as well as an ace by
Esther Kailiponi, made it a 20-14 lead.
Taylor Boyce sparked a set-ending rally with a kill at 22-15. A kill by Merrill and two WPU errors closed out the set on four straight LC State points for a 25-15 set win.
After the Knights earned the first point of the second set, LC State went on a four-point run with kills by Forgach Aguilar and Mortensen, as well as an ace by
Ella Stosich for a 4-1 edge. Another run of four, aided by a swing by Mortensen, made it 8-2, and a third four-point rally with blocks by Mortensen and Forgach Aguilar and a kill by Merrill made it 12-3. Merrill and Lindner went back-to-back and a kill by Boyce had the advantage at a commanding 15-6.
Lindner tallied a pair of kills before an ace by Stosich and kill by Forgach Aguilar helped the score to 22-12, and a swing by
Abby Beaton pushed the margin to 23-13.
Gianna Anderson ended the set with a kill for the second set win of 25-15.
The Knights had the hot hand to start the third set with a 3-0 run before a block by Forgach Aguilar and kill by Mortensen cut into the lead at 4-2. A kill by Forgach Aguilar was followed by an ace by Stout and kill by Mortensen kept the Warriors within two, 7-5, before a kill by Merrill cut the difference to one, 8-7.
Lindner tied the set 9-9 with a kill on an assist from
Abbey Neff before a WPU error put the Warriors in front. A pair of swings by Forgach Aguilar gave LC a four-point advantage at 13-9 as part of a five-point rally. Three more kills by Forgach Aguilar and Warner Pac miscues pushed the lead to 19-12 before an ace by Stout made it a 20-12 advantage.
Anderson and
Kate Schneider made it six straight LC State points with kills for a 22-12 advantage. A kill by Anderson gave the Warriors set point and a WPU error ended the match with a final of 25-18 in the set.
STAT RECAP
Forgach Aguilar led the match with 13 kills and Mortensen added seven. Both hit over .500 with Forgach Aguilar at a clip of .520 and Mortensen at .538. Lindner added five kills with a mark of .500. Kailiponi dealt 14 assists and Neff had 13.
Stout stood out with her career-high tying four aces and seven digs.
Natany Felix Guimaraes led the defense with 10 digs, while Mortensen and Merrill each played a role in three blocks.
The Warriors hit .333 as a team with nine service aces. They held WPU to an attack percentage of .054.
