GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Lewiston natives
Kobe Wessels and
Madigan Kelly had standout performances at the second day of the 2026 NAIA Indoor Track and Field National Championships on Friday. Wessels set an impressive school record to advance to the final in the 1000m, and Kelly raced her way to the 60m hurdles final. Both will take place on Saturday.
"As a coach, there are days when you aren't sure you are going to make it," coach
Mike Collins said. "One minute you go from thinking your heart is going to explode for joy for seeing one of your athletes achieving a huge goal and the next minute it is breaking because you see another one's dreams slip away. Today was one of those days. I could not be more excited for both Madigan and Kobe to make the finals, and outside of something catastrophic happening, earn All-American status tomorrow."
LC State had three athletes in action that did not advance with Lewiston's
Emily Collins in the 600m,
Camille Ussher in the 800m and
Jedidiah Barnaby in the 60m dash.
"On the other side, hard to see Camille run a great race but fall just short,"
Mike Collins continued. "Jed (Barnaby) ran into an injury near the end of the season that kept him away from something that he thought was once impossible, but suddenly seemed possible, and then an athlete that will never have a more special place in my heart (
Emily Collins), walk off the track knowing that her dream will not be realized."
Kelly finished third overall in the preliminary round of the 60m hurdles with a season-best time of 8.53. She won her heat and will race for her second All-American honor, and first indoor accolade, on Saturday.
Wessels bested times run by LC State legends to finish fifth in the prelims of the 1000m. His time of 2:25.99 beat the record set by Clayton VanDyke in 2022. He was second in his heat and will compete for his first individual track and field All-American award on Saturday.
Ussher ran the best 800m race of her career en route to a 10
th-place finish. Her time of 2:15.27 ranks third in LC State history and placed her well above her No. 23 seed heading into the event.
Collins was 16
th in the 600m with a time of 1:35.45 and Barnaby was 25
th in the 60m dash (7.69).
"Such is the nature of sport, and such is the nature of track and field,"
Mike Collins said. "This is why they are so great in the development of character in our young people in how they teach you the qualities of the importance of hard work, but also how to react appropriately to success and how to learn from and move on from disappointment. I am sure these lessons will make all of these young people better in the future. I am excited for tomorrow to see both Kobe and Madigan race and fellow senior, TJ (
Trenton Johnson) jump in his final indoor nationals. But the dad in me is going to need some time to recover from watching a few hearts break today. Warriors they all are, and I cannot be prouder."
