GREENWOOD, Ind. – Ten LC State Cross Country/Track and Field student-athletes earned College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District honors, announced on Tuesday. A total of five Warrior women and five men excelled in competition and in the classroom en route to the competitive honor.
To be eligible for the award, student-athletes must be at least a sophomore in standing and have at least a 3.50 cumulative grade point average. Eligibility for athletic criteria is based on TFRRS performance rankings at the time of nomination. NAIA student-athletes must rank in the top 25 in the conference in a single individual event.
"We are always proud of the efforts of our students in the classroom," coach
Mike Collins said. "They treat it like a team as well with support for each other and I think you see that with our overall grades and, for some who have the opportunity to compete athletically at a high level, the national recognition to be excelling as a student-athlete is a true reflection of their efforts and the support that they have around them. Always proud of my Warrior family."
On the women's side, seniors
Emily Collins and
Madigan Kelly each took home their third CSC honor in their career, while
Grace Tiegs and
Gianna Anderson earned their second.
Camille Ussher was tabbed CSC Academic All-District for the first time in her career.
For the Warrior men, senior
Trenton Johnson earned his third straight CSC award while
Kobe Wessels and
Perry Severijnse were each awarded their second.
Jedidiah Barnaby and
Ben Vernon capped their careers with their first CSC honors.
Collins finished her time as a Warrior with another trip to nationals in the indoor 600m. She finished 16
th in the NAIA in the event and set the program record during the season. She went on to excel in the outdoor 400m where she ranked eighth in the CCC as well as seventh as part of the 4x400m relay. The Lewiston native graduated this spring with a degree in exercise science with a 3.98 GPA.
Kelly wrapped up a decorated career with two All-American honors in her senior season as the first Warrior, male or female, to earn multiple national honors in the hurdles. The Lewiston native concluded her tenure with three total All-American honors after a sixth-place finish in the indoor 60m hurdles and fourth-place finish in the outdoor 100m hurdles this season. She earned her third Cascade Conference title in the 100m hurdles and was named the CCC Women's Track Athlete of the Meet for the second time. Kelly graduated with a degree in elementary education with a 3.67 grade point average.
Tiegs, from Nezperce, Idaho, earned her second CSC honor after a strong final season. The senior was one of the most consistent cross country runners for the Warriors this season and helped LC State qualify for the national meet where she finished 182
nd. She was a member of the fourth-fastest indoor 4x800m relay team that finished 15
th at nationals, and raced the second-best 1,500m in school history during the outdoor season. She finished 16
th in the event at outdoor nationals to end her career. Tiegs graduated this spring with degrees in chemistry and computer science with a 3.97 GPA.
Ussher finished her second year at LC State with an All-CCC honor and competed at nationals in three events. After a 142
nd place finish at the NAIA Cross Country Championships, Ussher ran the third-best indoor 800m in school history to place 10
th at indoor nationals. She, along with Tiegs, was a member of the fourth-fastest indoor 4x800m relay team that finished 15
th at nationals. In the outdoor season, she ran the third-best outdoor 800m to finish second at the CCC Championships to earn all-conference honors, then placed 17
th at nationals in the event. She is studying hospitality management and maintains a 3.86 grade point average.
Anderson etched her name in the record book with the fifth-best javelin throw in LC State Women's Track and Field history and earned a spot in the top 20 at the conference championships. The junior finished 17
th in the event at the CCC meet and maintains a perfect 4.0 GPA as a double major in business administration and exercise science.
Johnson led the LC State men with his third honor to earn the award in all three years he was eligible. The Nampa native finished his time as a Warrior as the program record-holder in both the indoor and outdoor triple jump and long jump. Throughout his career, he qualified for nationals in 15 different events between jumps and relays. In his final season, Johnson competed in the indoor and outdoor triple jump and 4x400m relay and set records in all events. He placed 15
th in the indoor 4x400m relay and 17
th in the indoor triple jump, then wrapped up his career with a 14
th-place finish in the outdoor 4x400m relay and 15
th in the outdoor triple jump. He graduated in the spring with a degree in industrial electronics with a 3.97 grade point average.
Wessels ended his career with his second CSC honor after a standout year on the track. The Lewiston native earned All-CCC honors with a 14
th-place finish at the conference cross country meet and advanced to the national meet individually where he finished 54
th. He set the LC State record in the indoor 1,000m with a stellar race and finished third in the final to earn All-American honors. During the indoor season, Wessels also ran the third-best mile in program history. He ran top-five times in the record book in the outdoor 800m and 1,500m during the season and took home the CCC title in the 800m at the conference meet. He earned All-CCC honors in the 1,500m as well. Wessels capped his career with a 19
th-place finish in the 1,500m at outdoor nationals. He graduated this spring with a degree in industrial electronics with a 3.58 GPA.
Severijnse finished his sophomore season with an All-American honor in the javelin. The native of the Netherlands earned a massive win in the event at the Cascade Conference Championships with a monster throw to earn the conference javelin title. He advanced to nationals where a throw of 60.94m earned him a seventh-place finish and All-American honor. He maintains a 3.84 grade point average as a psychology major.
Barnaby established himself as one of the fastest sprinters in the NAIA in the indoor season and led the nation for most of the year with a 60m dash time of 6.70. He was voted the NAIA National Track Athlete of the Week for his race and earned a spot at the national meet for the second time as an individual. Though an injury sidelined Barnaby during the season, he went on to be a key member of the 4x100m relay team that set the school record and placed 13
th at nationals. He graduated this spring with a degree in business and a minor in computer science with a 3.52 GPA.
Vernon wrapped up his career at LC State with a top-20 finish in the 3,000m steeplechase at the Cascade Conference Championships. The senior placed 19
th overall at the meet and finished 66
th at the CCC Cross Country Championships. He graduated in the spring with a degree in biology with a 3.95 grade point average.
