Women's Basketball Nick Fortini

No. 2 Warriors Tested, Survive Against No. 25 Montana Western

Box Score LEWISTON, Idaho – For the majority of the fourth and final quarter, the LC women's basketball team was trailing to No. 25 Montana Western.

But like the more recent games with LC showing their resilience, the Warriors were able to get a defensive stop with 5:16 to go in the game and later take the lead for good as Brittany Tackett hit a runner with 4:45 remaining to help defeat the Bulldogs 63-58 Saturday afternoon.

"Conference games are fun," Head Coach Brian Orr said. "They are a different animal. Teams get a chance to play the villain. Western is tough. They are hard to defend and they defend well."

The win extends the LC's unbeaten streak to 23 games. The Warriors are 23-0 on the season and 11-0 in Frontier Conference play. The Bulldogs fall to 17-4 overall and 6-4 in conference.

The two teams battled from the start giving the fans a little taste of what was yet to come. Brittany Tackett started the scoring with a jumper for the 2-0 lead. The score was tied four times in the quarter, with the Warriors getting the better end as Natahnee Spencer's field goal gave LC the lead just before the first quarter break.

Then the offense went cold for both teams. A total of 5:22 in the second quarter went by before a team tickled the twine. Caelyn Orlandi's two free throws broke the dry spell for the Warriors with LC leading 17-13. The Bulldogs went an even further time without scoring, finally hitting a field goal with 1:48 to go before the half. Unfortunately for the Warriors, they weren't able to extend their lead all too much. Hailey Turner's made both of her foul shots before the half giving LC a 25-20 lead heading into halftime.

A 3-pointer made by a Bulldog to start off the third quarter, sparked LC to kick it in gear. The Warriors went on a 6-0 run capped by Tackett's and-1 play. They lead by as much as nine before Montana Western's biggest run of the game, a 12-4 run to bring the game within one point. The Bulldogs grabbed their first lead since the first quarter with 2:15 remaining in the third. Their lead grew to four just before the end of the quarter, 46-42, after a trey by Savanna Bignell.

Trailing by four with 7:07 remaining in the game, LC mounted their comeback. Megan Risinger started it with a bucket followed by a jumper from Tackett to tie the game at 49-49. Tackett gave the Warriors the lead for good with her jumper. The Warriors hit the shots needs down the stretch as their defense held strong.

"I told them at halftime the shots will fall," Coach Orr said. "And later in the fourth they did to give us some breathing room."

Tackett finished with a team-high 19 points. Risinger and Orlandi were also in double figures with 14 and 11 respectively. Risinger tallied a double-double with 10 rebounds.

LC will hit their road in their next set of Frontier Conference games. The Warriors will take on Carroll on Friday Feb. 3 before facing off against Montana Tech on Saturday. Both games are slated for 4:30 p.m.
