Box Score LEWISTON, Idaho – Coach
LaToya Harris-Alexander saw the progress she's wanted to see in Lewis-Clark State's sweep of North Idaho College in an exhibition volleyball match Saturday afternoon at the LC Activity Center.
"I saw our offense start to kick in," said Harris-Alexander after the Warriors' 25-16, 25-21, 25-16 victory. "We're a defensive team and we needed to clean it up and get a solid connection with our setters. I saw that today."
While the teams added a fourth game for some extra touches (LC won it 25-17), it was
Rachel Gregg leading the attack throughout the day with nine kills in the first three games and a total 10 for the day. Assists came almost equally from
Lauren West (16) and
Anna Ingraham (15) with
Aubrey King tallying seven total kills.
Natalie Batiste and
Justine Cota Culp each contributed six. Batiste and Culp also had five blocks each.
After a back-and-forth rally to start the match, the Warriors started to pull away in the first game with a 10-2 run that turned the momentum in their favor. Anna Williamson had two kills in the run that also included kills by Gregg and Culp.
The second game was a different story as they fell behind 11-5 before regaining their stride to tie the match at 12 on a 7-1 run and to secure the decision by scoring eight of the game's final 10 points.
"We talked about getting away from that entitlement idea – that just because we won the first game, we should win the second one," Harris-Alexander said. "We relaxed a little too much. We had to just keep the fight and control the match. Our tempo was crucial. We got back to focusing on that."
As for her assessment of her team after the Warriors' final tune-up heading into regular-season action, Harris-Alexander said she is starting to see the pieces come together as one.
"I saw a tempo, a flow," she said. "I saw connections."
LCSC opens the regular season at Hope/Vanguard Summer Slam at Fullerton, Calif., Aug. 16-17.
