Box Score GREAT FALLS, Mont. –The Lewis-Clark State Volleyball Team is off to the best start the program has seen since 2010 after picking up their fifth-straight win on Friday. The Warriors improved to 7-2 after sweeping the Mayville State Comets in straight sets (25-19, 25-23, 25-16). The Comets came into the game fresh off of a win over the hosting Providence Argos, but the Warriors slowed their momentum with key plays from the offense.
Rachel Gregg and
Brooke Kaawa led the offensive attack with 13 and 11 kills, respectively. Defensively, the Warriors held the Comets to an attack percentage of just .080.
Aubrey King sparked the first Warrior rally of the afternoon, sending down a kill to set off a five-point rally to put LCSC in front 5-1. The Comets fought back to cut the lead to two before King and Kaawa combined for a pair of kills each to push the advantage to 18-12. The Warriors continued to roll through the set, capped by kills from Gregg, King and Kaawa to take the opening set 25-19.
The tables turned in the second set when the Comets jumped out to a 9-6 lead in the second set. They controlled the set and led by a considerable margin until
Sydney Lawrence sparked a four-point run with an assist from
Lauren West. A Kaawa kill and King ace evened the set at 16-16, before the Comets quickly regained the lead that they carried to 23-22.
King stepped up big, scoring back-to-back points to send the frame to set-point, and Kaawa closed it out with a kill to give LCSC a 2-0 set lead.
"We made adjustments that helped our defensive formation," Head Coach
Shaun Pohlman said. "We were reactive to the situation we were in and didn't get set in our ways. Aubrey [King] made the exact adjustment we talked about and executed it exactly as we had discussed."
The Warriors were in the driver's seat in the third set, not taking the foot off the gas to cruise to a quick 25-16 victory in the set. A kill by
Hayley Alvarez from West sparked a run of nine-consecutive points to put LCSC ahead by 12 at 24-12. Alvarez added an ace in the run while
Mikayla Sellers-Wiebe tallied four kills, including a span of three-straight. Sellers-Wiebe ended the match with her fifth kill of the set to give the Warriors a 25-16 set victory, and 3-0 sweep.
Olivia Jarvis was perfect in the match, notching five kills in five attempts, just one kill away from tying the single-match record. As mentioned, Gregg and Kaawa led the offense with 13 and 11 kills, respectively. West dished out 39 assists and
Gionni Brown led the defense with 20 digs. Gregg notched a double-double, adding 12 digs to go with her 13 kills.
"The leadership piece we have been working o is coming through, and that's a positive thing to see," Pohlman said. "We can't be satisfied going into tomorrow, though, and we still have to focus on what we are doing and not worry about what is going on with the team on the other side of the net."
The Warriors close out the tournament tomorrow with matches against Embry-Riddle at 9 a.m. and Medicine Hat College at 1 p.m.
