WHITEFISH, Mont. – After strong performances at the Lauren McCluskey Memorial meet hosted by the University of Idaho over the weekend,
Owen Lanning and
Cole Olsen were both named Frontier Conference Athletes of the Week. Lanning was named the Indoor Field Athlete of the Week, and Olsen was tabbed the Indoor Track Athlete of the Week.
Lanning placed second in the heptathlon with 4,347 points on Saturday. In the field of 19, the senior won both the pole vault (3.75m/12'3.5"), and the 1000m (2:45.26).
Olsen is no stranger to Frontier Conference weekly awards, having collected three Cross Country Runner of the Week awards in the fall. He was named Indoor Track Athlete of the Week this week after winning the 3000m run in Moscow on Saturday. In the field of 19, Olsen finished with a time of 8:45.84, 20 seconds faster than the second-place finisher.
"I am very excited to start off the season with some of our athletes being recognized by the conference," coach
Mike Collins said. "You really never know how the holiday break will go. Some kids come back in great shape, and it can be challenging for others to stay in shape."
"For our team in general, and especially Owen in the heptathlon and Cole in the 3000m, it was great to see that they had a good break and were able to focus on their training and respond well to competition," Collins said. "Owen's performance might even be more impressive due to all the skill components required in the heptathlon. I am excited for them and their representation of our program."
The Warriors are back in action this weekend in Pullman, Wash. at the WSU Indoor and Open.
