LEWISTON, Idaho - Lewis-Clark State College head volleyball coach,
Shaun Pohlman, has had a busy off-season recruiting the seven spots vacated by this past year's seniors. The latest addition to the 2019 team is Denise Elder and Pohlman's fourth junior college transfer who comes by way of Frank Phillips College in Borger, TX.
Elder spent the last two seasons with the Plainsmen earning All-Conference honors this past season. The Houston native went to Klein Forest high school earning All-Conference, as well as team MVP and Best Offensive Player; Elders also holds a school record in track and field when her 4x100 relay team broke the record.
Pohlman has this to say about the addition, "Denise is such a dynamic player. She can move quick laterally as well as in transition, and even though she is undersized, she gets off the ground in a hurry. She is going to adapt to our offense very well, and I am excited to have her on our side of the court."
Pohlman's interest in a transfer middle was finding a dynamic player that might get overlooked but has a lot of upside. "She is really fun to watch play," added Pohlman, "In fact, I got the lead from a DI friend of mine who really liked her, but she was just undersized for them. She wants to help build a program on and off the court and that is what we need – builders with energy!"
Elder couldn't agree more, "I'm so happy to be transferring to Lewis-Clark State College, and I'm looking forward to playing with the team. They were all awesome people to be around and I loved their energy. I'm just super excited to have the opportunity to play at a great school and to be in a great conference. I'm hoping I will make a great impact to the team so we can go far and make history for the program!"
"We are really proud of Denise for making a well-thought-out decision for her next step – Denise had D1, D2, and NAIA interests, and after many phone calls and a couple visits told me she absolutely loved Lewis-Clark State College and it was the place for her," states Frank Phillips College Head Coach, Amanda Black, "Denise has worked very hard [here] to be a leader to her team and focus on making good grades. She will bring a very aggressive block, fast arm-swing, and experience from playing the majority of her matches here. Luckily, she had good leadership as a freshman in the middle position and showed that she can teach and mentor as players come under her. I trust Denise is in good hands with Coach Pohlman with his experience with junior college players and his determination to have a successful program. We wish her and the team the best of luck."
