Box Score 2 WALLA WALLA, Washington – The Lewis-Clark State volleyball team opened the day with a dominating win over NCAA Division III Whitman College. The Warriors swept the Blues 3-0 and outscored their opponent 75-39 (25-12, 25-13, 25-14). Brooke Kaawa continued what she started yesterday, tallying 14 kills against Whitman with six service aces, and 10 kills and 10 digs against Whitworth.
The tables turned against Whitworth as the Warriors faced the Pirates for the second-straight day, though this time they played by NCAA rules as opposed to NAIA. The Warriors were unable to utilize the depth of their bench due to the cap the NCAA puts on substitutions. Although LC put up a fight in every set, they fell to the Pirates 3-0 (26-24, 27-25, 28-26).
"Whitworth played well, I have to hand it to them," coach Shaun Pohlman said, "but they beat a version of us that we were forced to play, but it was a great opportunity for us to learn from."
MATCH ONE: LCSC defeats Whitman 3-0 (25-12, 25-13, 25-14)
Tori Edwards put the first point on the board for LC to give the Warriors the early lead. The Blues struck for two take the lead but a bad serve evened things at two each. Channa Hart, Jordan Hunter and Carli Berntson provided three-consecutive kills, and an error by Whitman and an ace by Brooke Kaawa made it five-straight points to give the Warriors an 8-3 lead. Back-to-back kills by Berntson brought the lead to 10-4. Denise Elder joined in with a kill, then teamed up with Morgan Ness for a block as the Warriors continued to roll through the set. A run of three for the Warriors brought the score to 20-9, and a run of three, including a block by Hart and Berntson, pushed the advantage to 23-10. Berntson pushed the score to set-point and a service error by the Blues sealed the deal at 25-12.
The Blues gave the Warriors their first three points of the second set on servie errors before Kaawa dealt three-straight service aces to put LC in front 6-4 . Hunter added a kill to make it four in a row before Kaawa served up her fourth ace of the rotation to bring the lead to 8-4. A big solo block by Hunter sparked a five-point run that was capped by a kill by Hart to make it 15-7. Edwards buried a pair of kills in the middle of the Whitman defense to give LC a nice cushioned lead at 16-9. A run of four Warrior points came from a kill by Edwards, back-to-back service aces by Gionni Brown and a block by Elder and Edwards as LC continued to dominate on both sides of the ball and make it 22-10. A kill by Elder brought the set to 24-12 and Hunter ended it at 25-13.
After Whitman struck for four-straight to open the third set, the Warriors responded with five-straight with kills by Kaawa and a Brown ace to take a 5-4 lead. The Blues tied it up 5-5, but Kaawa continued to dominate with a pair of kills to put LC State back in front 7-5. She added two more service aces before Berntson slammed down a kill to grow the advantage to 10-6. Remick added two to the Warriors' ace total and Edwards tipped the ball over the net to bring the lead to 16-8. Kaawa sparked a four-point rally that saw LC leading 21-10, before nailing another to make it 22-11. Kaawa stayed hot, dealing the kill to give the Warriors 24 points before dishing the assist to Berntson to end the match with a 25-14 set win.
Kaawa led the Warriors with 14 kills in the match to go with six service aces. She was efficient with a .375 attack percentage. Remick led LC with 13 assists. Brown totaled 16 digs. As a team, the Warriors tallied 15 service aces.
MATCH TWO: Whitworth defeats LCSC 3-0 (26-24, 27-25, 28-26)
The Warriors faced the Whitworth Pirates for the second day in a row, though this time it was under a different set of rules. The Warriors had to change their style of play due to a cap on substitutions, giving the Pirates the upper hand.
The Pirates struck first to open the first set and take a 2-0 lead before an error put the Warriors on the board. An ace by Ruffing tied the set 3-3 and an error put LC ahead 4-3. The Pirates pushed ahead to hold a slim lead over LC State until an ace by Josilyn Remick put the Warriors in front 16-15. A Whitworth error and another ace by Remick made it four in a row to push the lead to 18-15. The Pirates battled back to tie the set at 23 each, but a Kaawa kill put LC back in the lead at 24-23. A few costly errors pushed Whitworth ahead to take the first set 26-24.
Kaawa gave LC the lead in set two with another big kill, and Edwards did her part with a kill of her own to make it 3-2. Edwards followed a kill with an ace to grow the Warrior lead to 5-3. Whitworth went on a run to regain the lead at 9-5 and force an LC timeout. An attack error by Whitworth tied the set 11-11 and Kaawa put the Warriors back in front with a strong swing to make it 12-11. Another kill by Kaawa added to the four-point rally to give the Warriors a 14-11 advantage. An Edwards kill was followed by another ace by Kaawa to keep up the lead, now at 17-13, and Edwards add two more kills to grow the lead to five at 19-14. The Pirates fought back to pull within one at 20-19, but a kill by Edwards and a Whitworth error pushed the lead back out to three at 22-19. The Pirates kept it interesting as they tied the set 25-25 before going on to take the set 27-25.
Set three produced the same outcome, with LC State battling until the very end before falling to Whitworth. A service ace by Hunter helped the Warriors out to a 3-0 lead early in the set, and kills by Edwards and Morgan Ness helped grow the advantage to 6-2. Whitworth battled back to take a 12-10 lead and held that lead until a block by Hunter and Hart evened the score 23-23. Whitworth regained the lead and was able to hold onto a 28-26 victory.
Edwards led the Warriors with 17 kills in the second match of the day and a .433 attack percentage. Kaawa notched her fourth double-double of the season with 10 kills and 10 digs, while Brown led the team with 18 digs. Ruffing dished out 21 assists.
The Warriors host Walla Walla on Friday at 4 p.m. in the Activity Center.
