SPOKANE, Wash. – Several more school records were broken and national-qualifying marks were met in only the Warriors' second meet of the indoor season. The athletes of LC State Track and Field returned to the world-class facility hungry to compete at The Podium once again on the first day of the Cougar Classic, hosted by WSU.

"A real nice day in our first meet in 2022," Head Coach Mike Collins said. "Some new school records and qualifying marks for nationals that bode really well when it comes to finishing out the rest of this indoor season over the course of the next month."

THE WOMEN
Madigan Kelly improved on her school-record time in the 60m hurdle prelims with a time of 9.05, earning her a national-qualifying standard, but the mark didn't last long. The freshman from Lewiston improved on the time in the final to set the record at 9.03 to finish sixth behind a group from UCLA. She was .01 off the school record in the 60m dash, clocking in at 7.99 to finish 11th in the NCAA Division I-heavy event.

"Madigan Kelly, a local gal, came out a did a really nice job today and improved her mark, breaking her own school record in the prelims of the 60m hurdles and then broke it again in the finals, just missing the A national-qualifying standard, which is pretty exciting," Collins said. "She running really well and she also ran well in the 200, so we are pushing her all over the place and are excited to see what she can do in that."

Jennah Carpenter took second in high jump with a mark of 1.60m, earning the freshman a school record in her collegiate track and field debut. The two-sport athlete (volleyball) also competed in the long jump and finished 12th with a mark of 4.87m.

"I think one of the other highlights is another local girl, Jennah Carpenter, today went 5'3" in the high jump, broke a school record, and is only 5cm off the national-qualifying mark in that," Collins said.

Sara Hathaway was 12th in the 60m hurdles with a time of 9.31 and Ashley Britt rounded out the top 15 at 9.46, career-bests for both Hathaway and Britt. Anika Grogan and Britt also found success in the 400m dash with a pair of personal-bests. Grogan was fourth in the field with a time of 1:00.08, and Britt was just behind in fifth (1:00.74).

In the 200m dash, Grogan finished 8th with a time of 26.10 and Kelly was back in action with a time of 26.92 to earn her a spot at 15th.

In distance events, Brooklyn Shell led the way for LC in the mile with a time of 5:28.75. She finished seventh in the field, with Abigail Peightal coming in ninth (5:36.49) and Rylee Brown placing 11th (5:46.54). Geraldin Correa and Grace McCormick represented LC in the 800m, with Correa finishing fifth (2:24.77) and McCormick eighth (2:41.06).

Emily Adams placed fourth in the 3,000m run with a time of 10:47 and was joined by three other teammates in the event. Abigail Gorton finished seventh (11:06), Madison Howe placed 10th with a 12:05, and Kelsey Henry followed in 11th (12:34).

In the pole vault, Cynthia Smith tied a career-best with a height of 3.30m to finish fourth in the event. The 4x400m relay team of Smith, Hathaway, Alexa Horsley and Correa finished fourth with a time of 4:08.

THE MEN
The program's mile record was shattered by Clayton VanDyke in his second-place finish in the event. He finished .09 seconds behind the top finisher with a time of 4:07.79, besting the previous record by nearly two seconds and reaching a national-qualifying mark. He also now holds the fastest NAIA mile time in the nation.

Cole Olsen won the 3,000m run with a time of 8:19, beating the runner-up by nine seconds. This time also punched his ticket nationals and set the facility record.

"Some highlights of the day go to Clayton VanDyke who broke our school record in the mile, running 4:07.79 and that is the number one time in the country right now," Collins explained. "Cole Olsen ran almost a new school record in the 3K, and that would give him a shot at breaking Sam Atkin's and obviously that is a pretty high standard, and he went out a won that race as well."

Ike Hopper ran a career-best time in the 60m hurdle prelims and tied the fourth-fastest in program history with his mark of 8.77. His time of 8.80 in the finals earned him a seventh-place finish. Terrell Lawson capped the top 10 with a time of 8.87 and went on to set the school record in the triple jump with a mark of 12.54m.

Another school record fell with the 4x400m relay team of London Kirk, Hopper, Cooper Carlson, and Jaxson Blaker. The group placed third with a program-best time of 3:27. The distance medley relay team of Brycen Brown, Dillon Dawson, Carter Gordon and VanDyke won with a national-qualifying time of 10:16.

Jaycob Atencio placed eighth in the weight throw with a throw of 12.98m, a career-best.

"Another other one that I would talk about as well is Jaycob Atencio in the men's weight throw," Collins added. "We think he is going to hit a national standard before this indoor season is over and he's getting better every time."

Ian Gardom opened the day with a top-five finish in the high jump. The freshman tied his personal-best at a mark of 1.80m. Lawson was 10th (1.70m) and Caleb Moore was 11th (1.65m).

In the 60m dash, Kirk was the top LC State finisher with a 7.20 time to take 14th. Zayne Maughan led the Warriors with a fifth-place finish in the pole vault (4.15m), and Cooper Carlson was fourth in the 800m (2:00.52). Kirk finished 6th in the 200m dash with a time of 22.66.

In the 5,000m run, freshman Brycen Kempton finished fifth with a time of 15:37 and Connor Turpin followed in sixth (15:38).

VanDyke will compete in the elite 800m on second day of the Cougar Classic at the Podium on Saturday at 3 p.m. All results from the Cougar Open can be found HERE.
