PORTLAND, Ore. – After picking up the road win against Multnomah on Friday night, the No. 22 LC State Women's Basketball team turned around quickly to defeat Warner Pacific University on Saturday afternoon in a dominant fashion, 87-52. The win against the Knights marks the sixth straight victory and gives the Warriors a conference record of 12-3.
Callie Stevens was key in the Warriors' offense with 18 points, and four other Warriors ended the game in double digits.
"We showed up tonight with a completely different defensive team," Head Coach
Brian Orr said. "Unlike last night, our ball pressure really helped our defensive rotations. We had a lot of deflections and we did a great job of contesting shots. Offensively, we executed really well and we did a great job of moving the ball. Definitely a team win."
Stevens and
Sara Muehlhausen were hot in the first quarter to help build a nine-point lead,16-7, six minutes in. Stevens made her way to a double-digit performance with two minutes to go in the frame, and LC State went into the second quarter leading by 13 with a score of 22-9.
The Warriors started the second quarter strong with a 3 from
Rachel Schroeder and a pair of free throws from
Mataya Green to add to the advantage. The Knights went on a six-minute scoring drought as the Warriors extended the lead with a steal and assist from Schroder, leading to a layup from
Adyson Clabby on the other end.
Maddie Holm followed shortly with a 3 to make it 29-11 with less than six minutes to go in the quarter.
A pair of free throws from Stevens extended the lead 31-11 and Muehlhausen built off of the momentum with an offensive rebound and put-back to give the Warriors two more points. The Knights answered with a couple baskets, but Muehlhuasen grabbed a rebound and
Hannah Broyles followed with a layup.
The Warriors held a commanding lead heading into the break with a score of 41-22.
Holm, Stevens and
Heidi Sellmann were all active within the first couple minutes of the third quarter, with a 3 from Holm extending the lead to 46-22. Broyles hit eight points in the game with a 3 to give the Warriors a 20-point cushion before Holm hit her fourth triple in the final two minutes of the quarter. Green followed with a pair of free throws to give the Warriors a lead of 31 points in which they maintained until the end of the quarter.
Stevens set the tone for the Warriors early in the final frame with a 3, also drawing the foul to capitalize on the four-point opportunity. The offense continued to roll as Green gave the Warriors a 30-point cushion at 3:10. Broyles' free throws in the final minute were the last buckets for the Warriors in the game, sending them home with a dominant win over the Knights.
Stevens led all scorers with 18 points and tied for the most assists at five, with
Ellie Sander also dishing out five. Broyles and Muehlhuasen each added 14 points and Holm had 12. Green added 10 points and grabbed five rebounds and Sander added four boards. Muehlhausen and Holm tied for the team-lead in rebounds with eight.
As a team the Warriors shot 50 percent from the floor, made 10 3-pointers and drained 15 free throws. They held Warner Pacific to just 26 percent from the floor and 17.6 percent from 3.
The Warriors return home for a highly-anticipated matchup with the College of Idaho on Friday, Feb. 4. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. in the P1FCU Activity Center.
