SPOKANE, Wash. – LC State Women's Tennis defeated NCAA Division III Whitworth for the second time this season on Sunday in 4-3 fashion. The Warriors earned the doubles point and won three singles matches to edge the Pirates.
Alexis Maison made her season debut and came up clutch for LC with the match-clinching point in No. 6 singles.
"
Alexis Maison made a winning debut seven months after her wrist surgery," Head Coach
Kai Fong said. "Her victory clinched the match when it was deadlocked. IT is very nice to have her playing again. She is helping beef up the doubles."
LC and Whitworth combined the NAIA and NCAA DIII scoring systems to start the day, with the doubles portion counting for one point (NAIA rule), but each match going to eight instead of six (DIII rule). The top doubles duo of
Catherine Khardina and
Elisiva Latu took their matchup 8-3, as did Maison and
Kyla Collier in the second doubles spot, to send the Warriors into singles play ahead 1-0.
The LC women won the fourth, fifth and sixth singles duels to take the match. Collier put on a show in No. 5 singles, not dropping a game for a 6-0, 6-0 win.
Maria Eduardo Santos da Silva earned a 6-2, 6-0 victory in fourth singles to tie the match 3-3, and Maison delivered with a 6-3, 6-2 win to send the Warriors home with a victory.
"The top of the lineup met their challenges and lost some close matches," Fong said. "The second half of the lineup picked up three wins for the victory. Maria played a very disciplined and methodical match. Kyla played very focused."
The Warriors will travel to Indiana at the end of the month for matchups with NAIA teams. The schedule for those matches will be available this week.
