GULF SHORES, Ala. – The weather hampered day one of the 2022 NAIA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships on Wednesday, moving multiple events to later in the week. LC State was able to compete in the first half of the men's decathlon, men's and women's 400m hurdles, and the women's 4x100m relay before rain and lightening caused a delay.
 
The delay occurred after the first heat of the women's 4x800m relay, so that event, as well as the men's 4x800m relay and men's 10,000m, will be held at a time to be determined. Stay tuned to naia.org for schedule updates.
 
THE MEN
Christian Bothwell opened the first day of competition with the first five events of the decathlon. The junior set personal-best marks in the 100m (11.71) to place 13th, long jump (6.21m) where he took 11^th, and shot put (11.22m) to place 11th. He was 13^th in the high jump (1.77m) and 10^th in the 400m with a PR of 52.24. After the first day of competition, Bothwell sits 11^th with 3,216 points.
 
"Christian did great and he's got a shot at a podium spot. I think that is awesome," Head Coach Mike Collins said.
 
In the 400m hurdles, Ike Hopper finished 22^nd with a time of 56.57.
 
THE WOMEN
The women's 4x100m relay team of Ashley Britt, Anika Grogan, Sara Hathaway and Madigan Kelly finished 30^th overall in the field of 39 with a time of 48.75.
 
Britt and Hathaway were both in action in the 400m hurdles, with Britt placing 18^th (1:04.31) and Hathaway taking 23^rd (1:06.74).
 
"Our girls that were in that 4x100m relay that also hurdled are doubling and it's tough to do, especially at this level," Collins said. "I think we saw a little bit of that, and the wind is a key component as well. It has been really windy in front of the storm that we are dealing with."
 
The NAIA will release an updated schedule of events later Wednesday night. It will be available on naia.org.
