ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Perry Severijnse earned All-American honors for the first time in his career to highlight the first day of the 2026 NAIA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships for LC State. The thrower placed in the top eight in the javelin, and the men's 4x100m relay team broke the school record once again.
Severijnse threw the javelin 60.94m in his third attempt. He sat in 19
th place prior to that throw but earned a spot in the final with his best throw of the day. He cleared 60m twice more in the series and placed seventh overall in the field of 25.
"Perry finished off our day and added to the growing number of All-Americans with his seventh-place finish in the javelin," coach
Mike Collins said. "He did this without even using his own javelin due to an unannounced change in the deadline to weigh in implements. But that tells you a lot about the mentality and camaraderie in track and field as all his competitors were willing to let him use theirs."
The 4x100m squad of
Jedidiah Barnaby,
Jordan Castillo,
Preston Cooper and
Collin Wimer finished as the No. 13 team in the NAIA with a school record time of 40.63. The time is nearly 0.2 seconds faster than their previous record set at the conference meet.
"A good day for Warrior Track and Field," Collins said. "Day started off with lightning delays that put off start times for everything, but the men's 4x100m relay ran to a school record. If timing is everything, then they timed it out well this year with the two fastest times in school history in the last two meets. The sprints are so incredibly competitive at nationals, it would truly take a perfect race to get to finals and even then, there's no guarantee."
Grace Tiegs, a native of Nezperce, and Lewiston's
Kobe Wessels completed their stellar LC State careers in the prelims of the 1,500m. The events started later than expected due to weather delays. Tiegs finished 16
th (4:44.71) and Wessels was 19
th (4:03.08) in their respective races.
"The lightning delay was not good for our distance runners as timing your warmup, food, etc., can be critical for those races, then on top of that their races ended up being strategic, which is an all-or-nothing scenario," Collins explained. "Both ran well, just not enough to make the finals. Great careers for two locally grown Idaho kids. I could not be prouder."
