LEWISTON, Idaho – No. 20 LC State Volleyball won a nail-biter on Saturday when it avenged its early-season loss to No. 22 Southern Oregon in five thrilling sets.
Taylor Boyce had a standout night offensively with 22 kills while the Warrior block held down the net to win the match with set scores of 25-15, 23-25, 23-25, 25-22, 15-11.
Boyce tied her career high in kills and
Addison Wilson had seven blocks.
Kendall Focht notched a career-best 25 assists to pair with 27 from
Teagan Scott. Senior
Makenzie Stout tied her personal-best with five service aces for half of the Warrior total.
The win improves the LC State record to 14-4 overall and 8-4 in Cascade Conference play. The victory moves the Warriors in front of SOU in the CCC standings into a tie for fourth.
HOW IT HAPPENED
LC State controlled the first set from the start.
Hadyn Smith tallied two kills and a swing by
Mikale Roy and ace by Stout gave the Warriors a 4-2 edge. Kills by Roy and Smith and an ace by
Ella Stosich pushed the margin to 7-3 before a big LC State run.
Karissa Lindner notched back-to-back kills before she teamed up with Boyce on a block, then Boyce added two straight kills before a rare libero kill by Stosich capped the six-point run at 14-6. Three more swings by Boyce and an
Ashlyn Watt ace made it 18-8, and a kill by
Aubree Lane ended the frame 25-15.
SOU turned things around to take the next two sets with matching scores of 25-23. The Raiders pulled in front 6-2 in the second, but a 6-1 run by LC State with tallies from Smith, Lane, Lindner,
Alba Carpena and Boyce evened things up 9-9. A kill by Carpena sparked a 9-1 rally that featured kills by Carpena, Boyce and Lane, as well as aces by Scott and Stout and blocks from Smith and Wilson for a 19-15 lead. SOU answered with a run of their own to pull in front 22-21 and outlasted LC State to edge the Warriors 25-23.
Southern Oregon maintained momentum to jump out to a 4-0 lead in the third set. Kills by Lane and Smith, a block by Smith and Wilson and ace by Stosich put the Warriors ahead 8-5 after an 8-1 run, and swings by Lane and Boyce kept the advantage at 12-9. SOU put together an 8-2 swing to surge in front 20-16. The Warriors tied things up at 21-21 and 22-22, but the Raiders outlasted LC State in another 25-23 frame.
LC State regained its footing in the fourth set after back-to-back kills by Roy helped the Warriors out to a 3-0 advantage. The sophomore added another to tie the set 7-7, but the Raiders responded to take a 15-11 lead. A pair of kills by Lane swung the momentum for LC State to cut the deficit to 17-15 before a six-point rally gave the Warriors the lead.
Jordynn Albright notched her first kill of the night before a block with Wilson, and Boyce made it 21-17 to cap the run. Carpena and Wilson made it 22-19 with a block and Smith ended the frame 25-22 with a kill.
Stout dealt a pair of aces and Boyce and Wilson put up a block for a quick 3-0 lead in the deciding fifth set. Boyce and Smith tallied consecutive kills to make it 5-1, and Boyce added another before a block with Lindner for a 7-3 cushion. A solo block by Wilson pushed the margin to six, 11-5, and kills by Lane, Boyce and Smith ended the contest with a 15-11 win in the frame.
STAT RECAP
Boyce led the contest with 22 kills, Smith added 13 and Lane had 10. Scott led the setters with 27 assists and Focht dealt a career-high 25. Scott notched a double-double with 13 digs in the contest.
Wilson had a stellar night at the net to lead the Warriors with seven blocks. Boyce and Lindner each assisted on four. Stosich led the back row with 16 digs and Stout collected 10. LC State dealt 10 service aces with five from Stout.
LC State held SOU to a .164 attack percentage with the help of 11 blocks.
Friley Curtiss led SOU with 14 kills and Briella Mathis added 12. Annie Hite dealt 25 assists and Maelle Garon collected 23 digs. Tessa Zimmermann put up a match-best eight blocks and Curtiss added seven.
