FULLERTON, Calif. – Plenty of adages apply to Lewis-Clark State's three-set loss to #2 Dordt College during the second day of the Hope/Vanguard Summer Slam.
The most appropriate might be it was a learning experience. After falling 25-14 in the first set, the Warriors dropped the second set 25-20 then battled past the wire in the third before coming up short, 27-25.
"The most important thing was I was able to see growth," coach
LaToya Harris-Alexander said. "We're seeing improvement each match."
Switching offensive formations between the first and second sets changed the tone for the Warriors then blending what worked in the first and second set the stage for the point-for-point battle in the third.
The Warriors battled back from a seven-point deficit early in the second set to within two, 19-17, on kills by
Aubrey King,
Alexa Van Vleet and
Rachel Gregg before Dordt capitalized on some LC miscues to score six of the set's final eight points to win.
Dordt jumped to a 7-3 lead in the third before the Warriors started to battle back and take the lead, 11-10, on a kill by Van Vleet with an assist from
Lauren West. From that point forward, neither team had more than a two-point advantage with Dordt finally securing the match on a kill by Ema Altena.
Gregg and King each had eight kills as the Warriors had an attack percentage of .202. West wound up with 23 assists and
Luana Thompson contributed with 15 digs.
The Warriors take on 25th-ranked College of Idaho tonight at 8.
