LEWISTON, Idaho - The Lewis-Clark State women's tennis team put up a fight against the Whitman College Blues on Monday afternoon, but ultimately fell 7-2 to the NCAA DIII program.
"Despite falling short of the intended outcome, this was a well contested match against the 27th ranked DIII team," coach Kai Fong said. "They had the upper hand the last few years by bigger margins."
In doubles action, the duo of Begona Andres and Laura Rosselli put up a fight in No. 1 doubles. The two pushed Whitman's Mary Hill and Andrea Gu until falling 8-7. In No. 2 doubles, Laura Diaz and Sophie Uhlenkott fell 8-5; as did Jen Roux and Kyla Collier in No. 3 doubles.
Rosselli and Alexandra Barry picked up the two Warrior wins on the day. Rosselli swept No. 2 singles 6-4, 6-2, and Barry did the same in No. 6 singles 6-1, 6-2.
Andres fought through three sets before falling in the top singles spot 6-3, 1-6, 6-4. Diaz also battled through three sets before Whitman's Nastua Redkina claimed the No. 3 singles match 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
"This was a close match considering we lost three three-setters, but that is how the ball bounces sometimes," Fong said. "The players fought hard and that is what mattered the most. I am very encouraged with the potential of this team."
The Warriors travel to Boise, Idaho this weekend to take on two NCAA DI opponents. They face Weber State on Friday at 9 a.m. and Boise State on Saturday at 8 a.m.
