LEWISTON, Idaho – The Warrior Women's Tennis team picked up its first win of the season in Saturday's home opener against NCAA III Whitworth. LC State defeated the Pirates 5-2, picking up wins in five of six singles matches.

"I think we needed this to push us because we are just starting competition and it's easy to get down after you lose a couple matches," Alexis Maison said, "This gives us motivation."

In her final home opener, Begona Andres picked up a hard-fought win in No. 1 singles.

"It's exciting. It was a good fight for sure, so it's good to start with a match like this," Andres said. "We just enjoy every single opportunity that we have here."

Whitworth earned the doubles point after winning in the first and second spot. Sophie Uhlenkott and Maison teamed up for a 6-3 victory in No. 3 doubles.

In singles play, the top four matches went to three sets. This is something coach Kai Fong has not seen in the Tennis Center in quite some time.

"It has probably been about 20 years since we have had all four courts playing this closely and going to three sets," Fong explained.

After dropping the first set in the top singles slot 0-6, Andres stormed back to take her match 0-6, 7-6, 6-3. Laura Diaz (No. 2 singles) and Laura Rosselli (No. 3 singles) also dropped their first sets before battling back for victories. Diaz fell behind 0-3 in her third set, but responded well to take the match 5-7, 6-2, 6-3.

Maison earned a victory in her Tennis Center debut, taking the No. 4 singles match by a score of 6-3, 4-6, 6-2. Kyla Collier won the fifth singles match, also in three sets, 6-2, 1-6, 11-9.

The home stand continues on Sunday morning when the Warriors host the only home NAIA contest of the season. College of Idaho will be in town for a 9 a.m. match.
