The women's 1998 rodeo team captured the national team title at the College National Finals Rodeo in Rapid City, S.D. What made the feat so remarkable was that LC did it with only four team members and trailed by 80 points to defending champion Weber State entering the final day. The Warriors, competing against NCAA schools as well, put up big numbers during the final round and finished with 495 points, 10 better than the Wildcats.
Â
On the final day, LC State's Jamie Richard finished second in barrel racing, while Angie Champneys was second in breakaway roping. Katy Anderson took fourth in the all-around rankings. Tanya Louis also took part at nationals.
Â
"Pull me off the rafters," said Karen Fuller, who was the team's co-coach with her husband, Mike, after winning the title. Â "We were second coming in (to the final day), and we kicked their butts."
